NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice. Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot has told officers at New Amsterdam Prison that the decisions they make on duty are critical to keeping the facility safe, secure and orderly, and that poor judgement can turn a volatile situation into a crisis.
Speaking at the quarterly muster and general staff meeting for ranks stationed at the prison on Friday 4 September, Mr Elliot said officers are the first line of defence, and that a bad call can escalate a situation or compromise security.
He reminded ranks that institutional policies must be applied consistently, without losing personal composure or professional ethics.
“Sound decisions while on duty are critical to maintaining safety, security, and order within our facilities,” he said.
Closing the muster, the director urged officers to take up the personal development and training opportunities available to them. The prison system, he said, is moving quickly from a punitive model to a rehabilitative and correctional one, and officers will need to grow professionally to meet that shift.
The quarterly muster is part of the Guyana Prison Service’s ongoing effort to reinforce discipline, professionalism and modernisation across its facilities.
