NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — September 7, 2026
The Director of Prisons has told prison officers that the decisions they make on duty are critical to the safety and security of the country's prison facilities. He spoke on Friday, September 4, 2026, at the quarterly muster and general staff meeting held at the New Amsterdam Prison.
The director said officers serve as the first line of defence. According to him, poor decisions can escalate a volatile situation or compromise security at the facilities.
He also reminded officers that they must apply institutional policies consistently, without losing their composure or their professional ethics.
"Sound decisions while on duty are critical to maintaining safety, security, and order within our facilities," the director said.
In closing, he urged officers to take advantage of the personal development and training opportunities available to them.
The director stressed that the prison system is moving rapidly from a punitive model to a strategic, rehabilitative and correctional framework. To manage that change effectively, he said, officers must actively pursue their own professional growth.
The quarterly muster forms part of ongoing efforts to reinforce discipline, professionalism and modernisation within the Guyana Prison Service. Such meetings bring officers together to hear directly from the service's leadership on expectations for their conduct and performance.
The director's message at New Amsterdam placed the responsibility for safe and orderly prisons firmly on the day-to-day judgment of the officers who work inside them.
