NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — September 8, 2026
The Minister of Amerindian Affairs has officially opened an art exhibition at Castellani House to mark Amerindian Heritage Month. The exhibition features works by indigenous artists from across Guyana and will run throughout September.
Several officials from the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs attended the opening. They included a ministerial advisor, a Member of Parliament, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry and the ministerial planner.
Speaking at the opening, the minister said the exhibition highlights the rich heritage, talent and diversity of the country's first peoples. She said it also reminds the nation of the important role art plays in preserving culture.
The display brings together the work of indigenous artists from different parts of the country. It gives visitors the chance to see the creativity and skill that exist within Amerindian communities.
Members of the public are invited to visit the exhibition during the working hours of the National Gallery of Art. It remains open for the whole of September, so those who wish to see it have the full month to do so.
The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs says the exhibition is part of ongoing activities to celebrate Amerindian Heritage Month. It said the programme is also meant to promote the contribution of indigenous people to national development.
Heritage Month activities are held each year to recognise the place of Amerindian peoples in the life of the nation. The art exhibition is one of the ways the ministry is choosing to do that this year, by putting the work of indigenous artists on public display.
