Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo chaired a high level meeting aimed at improving accountability, transparency and service delivery across the public sector. The meeting was held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre.
It brought together ministries, all permanent secretaries, regional executive officers, accounting officers of key semi-autonomous agencies and other senior officials.
Discussion centred on measures to strengthen management in ministries, regions and public agencies. Special focus was placed on accountability and transparency in procurement, transactions and government payment systems. Officials also looked at how information is shared with the public. All of this is aimed at ensuring more effective delivery of government programmes.
Mr. Jagdeo told the gathering that permanent secretaries have a critical role in ensuring compliance with laws and regulations. He said they are also responsible for the sound and efficient management of the public resources entrusted to them.
The Vice President also highlighted a new initiative to strengthen the tracking of compliance, particularly in the areas of procurement and payments. Accounting officers were cautioned that breaches and violations will result in consequences.
He reiterated the PPP/C government's unwavering commitment to using modern technology to improve how citizens interact with State institutions. The goal, he said, is to ensure better quality public services and a better quality of life for the people.
Mr. Jagdeo said stronger oversight and accountability will remain key priorities as the government works to deliver more efficiently to citizens nationwide.
