VP Jagdeo chairs high-level meeting on public sector accountability

GEORGETOWN, Guyana. Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo chaired a high-level meeting on Monday aimed at improving accountability, transparency and service delivery across the public sector.

The meeting, held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, brought together permanent secretaries, regional executive officers, accounting officers from key semi-autonomous agencies and other senior officials.

Discussion centred on strengthening management in ministries, regions and public agencies, with particular focus on accountability and transparency in procurement, transactions, government payment systems, and how information is shared with the public. The aim, officials said, is more effective delivery of government programmes.

The Vice President told the gathering that permanent secretaries have a critical role in ensuring compliance with the law and in the sound and efficient management of the public resources entrusted to them. He set out new measures to tighten the tracking of compliance, particularly around procurement and payments, and cautioned accounting officers that breaches and violations will carry consequences.

He restated the government’s commitment to using modern technology to improve how citizens deal with state institutions, and to deliver better public services and a better quality of life.

Stronger oversight and accountability, he said, will remain key priorities as the government works to deliver more efficiently to citizens across the country.
