A landmark moment for football in Berbice was achieved with the official launch of the Berbice Senior Men’s Football League, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, on Saturday 18 October 2025.
The event took place at the All Saints ground in New Amsterdam, which will host all league matches. It marked the return of structured senior-level football to Berbice, an area that has long felt overlooked in the development of the national game.
Seventeen teams are set to compete in the inaugural season, with a total prize pool of $1 million up for grabs.
During the launch, Philip Carrington, vice-president of the Berbice Football Association with responsibility for competitions and football development, expressed gratitude for the opportunity. He said Berbice had been neglected by the national federation when it came to development, and that he had gone directly to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport to ask for the assistance that made the league possible.
Franklin Wilson, assistant director of sport, said planning for the league had begun more than eight months earlier and praised Mr Carrington as the driving force behind the initiative.
Mr Wilson added that what was on display represented only a snippet of the young players coming through the various clubs, and pledged continued support at junior level, noting the importance of keeping players competing consistently from the under-13 and under-15 age groups through to the senior ranks.
The games, which commenced on 18 October, were expected to conclude on 1 November 2025. The winning team will receive $500,000, while the runner-up will be awarded $300,000. The third and fourth placed teams will take home $200,000 and $100,000 respectively.
