Guyana Ends CARIFTA Games Campaign With Six Medals

Guyana has completed its 2026 CARIFTA Games campaign with a total of six medals, finishing fourth overall at the championships held at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium in Grenada.

The team secured four gold medals, one silver and one bronze, placing behind Jamaica, the Bahamas and Trinidad and Tobago on the medal table.

On the final day of competition Guyana produced one of its standout performances in the girls under-17 800 metres, with the winning athlete crossing the line in 2 minutes 10.76 seconds. A Grenadian athlete took silver and the bronze went to Haiti.

Earlier in the games Tianna Springer advanced to the final of the girls under-20 400 metres after recording the fastest qualifying time, clocking 52.83 seconds in her heat ahead of competitors from Barbados and Antigua and Barbuda.

Despite the strong medal haul, the team faced some challenges on the closing day. In the last event of the championships the boys under-20 4×400 metres relay team finished sixth, with Barbados, Jamaica and the Bahamas taking the top three positions.

In the individual events a Guyanese athlete placed seventh in the boys under-17 800 metres final, while another narrowly missed a medal in the boys under-20 800 metres, finishing fourth. Guyana also had a fifth-place finish in the boys under-20 200 metres and a seventh place in the 5,000 metres.

In the field events Guyana came close to another medal in the boys under-17 long jump, finishing fourth with a leap of 6.44 metres.

At the end of the championships Jamaica topped the medal table once again, with the Bahamas second and Trinidad and Tobago third. Even so, Guyana’s fourth-place finish and six-medal haul points to strong progress from the country’s young athletes.
