HOUSTON, East Bank Demerara — A workplace accident at a construction site at Plantation Houston has claimed the life of a Cuban national and left two other workers injured.
The three men were reportedly working on a metal scaffold outside a building on Tuesday morning when the scaffold rolled backwards and made contact with overhead power lines. All three received an electric shock. One worker was pronounced dead at the scene; the other two were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital for treatment.
The Guyana Power and Light Company confirmed that the scaffolding came into contact with one of its 13.8 kV primary distribution lines. GPL has since reminded contractors, workers and the public to exercise caution when working near electric lines, poles and other infrastructure, and stressed that appropriate safety measures must be maintained to prevent similar accidents.
Police and emergency personnel responded to the scene, and investigations into the circumstances of the incident are continuing. The identities of the deceased and the two injured men had not been publicly released at the time of this report.
