Senior Minister with responsibility for finance Dr. Ashni Singh has called for greater coordination across agri-food systems as countries work to address food insecurity and build resilience. He made the call while speaking at a high level ministerial dialogue during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Dr. Singh highlighted Guyana's progress in reducing hunger and under-nourishment to below 2.5 percent. He said, however, that the country remains vulnerable to severe weather, geopolitical disruptions and rising costs affecting agriculture production.
The finance minister pointed to increases in wheat, fertilizer and diesel prices, noting that such pressures could affect the global food security outlook.
He outlined several measures being implemented in Guyana, including investments in agriculture, improved farm to market connectivity, and climate resilient technologies such as hydroponics and shade houses. He also spoke of the expansion of farmers markets across the country.
Dr. Singh further highlighted Guyana's national school feeding programme and child and youth health initiatives aimed at improving nutrition among young people.
According to Dr. Singh, 156,000 new jobs have been created over the past five years as part of efforts to improve household incomes and access to basic necessities.
He said Guyana will continue working with CARICOM to strengthen regional food security by increasing agriculture production and improving trade in food and agriculture products.
