Police Sergeant Under Close Arrest after Alleged Gunfire at Beterverwagting Event

GUYANA — A serving police sergeant has been placed under close arrest and is facing an internal investigation after allegedly discharging several rounds into the air during an entertainment event at a community centre ground at Beterverwagting on Saturday night, August 9, 2026.

The officer has been identified as Station Sergeant Orville Kendall. According to information reaching this newscast, Kendall allegedly pulled his force-issued Glock pistol during the event and fired several shots into the air while Vybz Kartel’s song “No Man” was reportedly being played. At least one spent shell casing is said to have been recovered from the scene.

The matter took a more serious turn on Sunday, when Kendall reportedly went to the Cove and John Police Station at approximately 5:40 p.m. and handed over his service weapon to a detective corporal. The firearm was identified as a black Glock 17 pistol, together with its matching magazine and 15 live rounds of 9mm ammunition. The weapon and ammunition were subsequently secured as part of the investigation.

Investigators have also taken steps to determine whether the firearm was discharged. Kendall’s hands were reportedly swabbed for gunshot residue, with the samples secured for forensic examination, while the pistol is expected to undergo ballistic testing as investigators work to establish what occurred.

Information gathered by this newscast further suggests that investigators may also be examining whether there were previous allegations involving the sergeant and the discharge of his force-issued firearm. Multiple sources have claimed that similar concerns had surfaced in the past, and questions are now being raised about whether those earlier allegations were formally investigated, what action, if any, was taken, and whether the circumstances were assessed before Kendall continued to carry a service weapon.

For now, Kendall remains under close arrest while investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding Saturday night’s alleged gunfire. The firearm, ammunition and forensic samples are in police custody, and the investigation remains ongoing.
