Thirty five healthcare workers have begun training in sexual and reproductive health for persons with disabilities, aimed at improving access to inclusive and equitable care.
The training was officially opened in the presence of Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony.
The initiative focuses on strengthening the capacity of primary health care and community health workers to better address the sexual and reproductive health needs of persons with disability.
Participants are being trained to recognize the health inequities faced by persons with disabilities and to understand the factors that contribute to these disparities.
The training also places emphasis on informed consent, reasonable accommodations, and adopting communication methods suited to the individual needs and preferences of patients.
Health officials say the initiative is intended to ensure persons with disabilities receive health care that is safe, timely, people centered and delivered with dignity, free of discrimination or unnecessary barriers.
The program forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Guyana's health system while promoting greater autonomy, dignity and social inclusion for persons with disability.
Also attending the opening ceremony was PAHO representative in Guyana Dr Kim Eva Dixon, along with other health officials and representatives involved in the initiative.
