NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — October 15, 2026
A seventeen-year-old schoolgirl and a twenty-one-year-old man died on Monday, October 12, in an incident police believe to be a murder-suicide at Block 22, West Mindenham.
Police said Tisha Andrews, a schoolgirl from Block 22, had just arrived home from school at around 4:30 p.m. when she was approached by a man with a firearm who shot her in the head.
The man, identified as twenty-one-year-old Anthony Kellan Malachi Kato of Amelia's Ward, was found dead at the scene a short time later from what investigators suspect was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A .32 pistol was reportedly found near his body.
Andrews was taken to the Linden Hospital Complex, where she was pronounced dead.
Police say Kato was Andrews' ex-boyfriend and the two had been in a relationship that had ended. It is alleged that Kato had been pressing her to reconcile.
Investigators say that after Andrews posted a photo with another individual whose face was blocked out, Kato posted a WhatsApp status suggesting he was about to do something that would upset everyone.
It is further alleged that on the day of the incident, Kato had a friend call Andrews' grandmother pretending to be a teacher, to find out whether she was at home. Police also allege that he had been sending Andrews disappearing photographs of himself with a gun, along with threats.
Authorities stressed that these details remain allegations as police continue to piece together the full sequence of events leading up to the deaths.
