Fire Service marks 69th anniversary with route March, Minister praises ranks

NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — October 13, 2026

The Guyana Fire Service marked its 69th anniversary with a route march through Georgetown on October 12, 2026.

Firefighters and other ranks displayed discipline and pride as the parade began at the Square of the Revolution and proceeded along Brick Dam, where ranks paid a traditional eyes right salute to Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond before the parade concluded at Ashmin's Building on High Street.

Speaking after the parade, Minister Walrond praised the professionalism, discipline and resilience of the men and women of the Fire Service, noting their willingness to risk their lives deserves national recognition.

The minister said that having seen firefighters respond firsthand, the occasion is more than ceremonial, and serves as an opportunity to recognize the sacrifices of those who protect lives and property.

Minister Walrond highlighted major investments to strengthen the service's response capacity, including new fire tenders, trucks and a fireboat. She stressed that this investment is not just for parade purposes, but to reduce response times and minimize loss of life and property.

She cited a recent fire at a children's home, where ranks from a newly established fire station responded in under two minutes, averting a potential catastrophe with no injuries reported.

Minister Walrond also noted improved containment of fires in congested commercial areas such as Regent Street, attributing this to better equipment and water access, supported by an ongoing programme to restore existing fire hydrants and install new ones as communities expand.

While equipment is critical, the minister said the people of the Fire Service remain its greatest asset. Extending anniversary greetings, she said Guyana is proud of its firemen and women and wished them continued growth from strength to strength.
