NEW AMSTERDAM, REGION SIX — New Amsterdam is set for a major modernisation effort as the Government moves forward with its Model Village Initiative, aimed at improving infrastructure, public spaces and the overall quality of life for residents.
The plans were outlined on Saturday, August 8, 2026, during a consultation with residents, where President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali said the initiative is intended to create a safer, more organised and vibrant community.
The proposed upgrades include a new municipal market designed with separate areas for produce, meat, fish, dry goods and clothing, along with a food court. A dedicated vendors’ hub is also planned, to relocate roadside vendors into a more organised and sanitary environment with improved vehicle access.
Government officials say detailed surveys identified 235 locations where construction materials or waste are obstructing road shoulders, as well as 148 sites with accumulated garbage; these areas have been targeted for cleanup. At least 200 utility poles have also been identified for replacement or reinforcement, with Guyana Power and Light and Guyana Water Inc. expected to coordinate the relocation of utilities ahead of major construction.
The project will also include drainage improvements, upgraded interlocked drains and expanded fire hydrant coverage throughout the town. Public safety is another key component, with security camera coverage expected to expand significantly under the Government’s Safe City programme.
Meanwhile, the New Amsterdam Esplanade Ground is slated for a major redevelopment. Proposed improvements include a children’s playground, gazebos, green spaces, tennis and basketball courts, improved lighting, sidewalks, landscaping and community gathering areas.
Officials say construction will be carried out in phases, beginning with utility relocation, followed by drainage, pedestrian access, road improvements and green space development. Residents affected by reserve encroachments are expected to receive advance notice before structures such as fences are relocated.
The Government says the broader objective is to create a cleaner, safer, more organised and family-friendly New Amsterdam, while strengthening the town’s infrastructure and economic activity.
