Police Corporal to Face Trial over Death of 15 Year Old Annandale Student

GEORGETOWN — The case surrounding the death of a 15-year-old Annandale Secondary School student is heading before the courts, with Police Constable Yonette Cumberbatch set to stand trial on August 17, 2026.

Cumberbatch, 35, appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, where the date for the trial was formally set. She is accused of causing death by dangerous driving in connection with a fatal collision that occurred on October 30, 2025.

The charge alleges that Cumberbatch was behind the wheel of motorcar PAB 214 along the Success Public Road, East Coast Demerara, when the vehicle struck student Navindra Majeed as he was crossing at the pedestrian crossing.

Majeed reportedly sustained serious injuries, including trauma to the head and a fractured right leg. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for medical attention but later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. His death was recorded at approximately 9:56 a.m. that morning.

Cumberbatch has pleaded not guilty to the charge. She was previously granted bail in the sum of $500,000, and among the conditions attached to her release, she is required to report to the police on the first Monday of every month and to surrender her passport to the court.

The matter will now proceed to trial on August 17, 2026, when the court is expected to hear evidence surrounding the circumstances that led to the teenager’s death.

The allegations against Cumberbatch have not been proven, and she remains presumed innocent unless and until she is found guilty by the court.
