NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — October 13, 2026
A 17 year old schoolgirl and a 21 year old man died on Monday in what police are treating as an alleged murder suicide at Block 22, Berbice.
Police said Tisha Andrews had just returned home from school around 4:30 p.m. when a man identified as Anthony Kellan Malachi Kato, reportedly her ex boyfriend from Amelia's Ward, approached her with a firearm and shot her in the head.
Kato was found dead at the scene a short time later from what investigators suspect was a self inflicted gunshot wound. A .32 pistol was reportedly recovered near his body.
Andrews was rushed to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Police are now piecing together the history between the pair. It is alleged the two had been in a relationship that ended, and that Kato had been pleading with Andrews to reconcile.
Investigators allege that after Andrews posted a photo with another person whose face was blocked out, Kato put up a WhatsApp status saying what he was about to do would upset everyone.
It is further alleged that on the day of the shooting, Kato had a friend call Andrews' grandmother pretending to be a teacher in order to find out whether she was home. Police also allege he had been sending her photographs of himself with a gun as a threat.
Authorities stressed that these details remain allegations as the investigation into the deaths continues.
