NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — September 9, 2026
The Ministry of Education has started delivering two Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) programmes at two practical instruction centres, including the Fellowship Practical Instruction Centre, as part of a decentralisation drive in technical and vocational education.
Classes officially began on Monday at both centres. This marked the start of the practical rollout of the programmes.
The initiative follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Carnegie School of Home Economics and the two centres.
Under the agreements, students can now study commercial food preparation at CVQ level one and garment making at CVQ level one. Both programmes are now available closer to the communities where the learners live.
The Ministry of Education says the decentralisation is part of its wider effort to expand access to quality technical and vocational education and training (TVET) across Guyana.
The move is expected to bring recognised skills training closer to learners. The ministry says it will also create greater opportunities for certification, employment and entrepreneurship.
The ministry added that the initiative supports its focus on making TVET programmes accessible and relevant. The aim is to allow more Guyanese, regardless of where they live, to gain skills for their personal and professional development.
