GEORGETOWN, Guyana. The first gas turbine at the Gas-to-Energy plant is on schedule to come online by the end of 2026, delivering roughly 57 megawatts to the national grid, following a site inspection by Prime Minister Brigadier (ret’d) Mark Phillips, who holds oversight of the energy sector and the project.
The inspection took in the gas turbine, the steam turbine, storage tanks, foundations, piping and supporting systems. Work is also advancing on the substation that will carry electricity from the plant into the grid.
According to the Department of Public Information, the Prime Minister noted significant progress since his previous inspection in June, with several major components now installed and critical infrastructure moving forward across the site.
Under the current schedule, the remaining units will be brought online after the first, in line with the project’s implementation plan.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar, head of the Gas-to-Energy Task Force and project lead Winston Brassington, senior petroleum coordinator at the Ministry of Natural Resources Bobby Gossai Jr, and Kesh Nandlall, who heads the Guyana Power and Light executive management committee.
The visit forms part of the government’s periodic assessment of the project. Officials say the works are being monitored to keep them aligned with the established timeline.
The plant is expected to play a major role in expanding Guyana’s generating capacity at a time of steadily rising demand for power, a strain that showed itself in the weekend’s nationwide outages.
