NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — September 7, 2026
Eighteen-year-old Officer Cadet Fiana Tading has made history in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) after being selected to train at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.
Tading was chosen just five months into the GDF's standard officer course, Number 58. Her selection is being described as a historic achievement for women in the force.
She is originally from Moruka in Region One and now lives on the East Coast of Demerara. Tading said she joined the GDF in pursuit of a better future for herself and her sisters.
She credited a teacher with encouraging her to apply to the force. Tading described her selection for Sandhurst as unexpected, but said she is grateful for the opportunity.
She intends to make the most of the training, gaining as much knowledge and experience as possible before returning to Guyana to continue serving in the GDF.
Tading also identified her older sister as a major support throughout her journey.
As she prepares for this new chapter, she hopes her achievement will inspire other young Guyanese, particularly women, to consider careers in the Guyana Defence Force.
Her selection marks another milestone in the growing participation of women in Guyana's military. It also places her among a select group of Guyanese officers to receive training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
