GEORGETOWN, Guyana. Officer Cadet Fiana Maria Tading, 18, has been selected to train at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, a milestone for women in the Guyana Defence Force.
She was chosen just five months into the GDF’s Standard Officer Course 58, an achievement the force describes as historic.
Originally from Moruca in Region One and now living at Strathspey on the East Coast of Demerara, Officer Cadet Tading said she joined the GDF in pursuit of a better future for herself and her sisters. She credits a teacher with encouraging her to apply, and described her selection for Sandhurst as unexpected, saying she is grateful for the opportunity.
She intends to make the most of the training, gaining as much knowledge and experience as she can before returning to Guyana to continue serving. She named her older sister as her greatest support along the way.
She hopes her selection will encourage other young Guyanese, particularly women, to consider a career in the defence force. It places her among a select group of Guyanese officers to have trained at Sandhurst, and marks another step in the growing role of women in the country’s military.
