Gas to energy project advances, first turbine expected online by end of 2026

NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — September 9, 2026

Prime Minister Brigadier (ret'd) Mark Phillips has inspected the latest works on the gas to energy project, and the first gas turbine is still scheduled to come online by the end of 2026.

Mr. Phillips, who has responsibility for oversight of the energy sector and the project, toured the facility to review developments on site. The inspection covered the gas turbine, steam turbine, storage tanks, foundation, piping and other supporting systems.

Work is also advancing on the substation, which will play a crucial role in transmitting electricity generated at the facility to the national grid.

The Prime Minister noted that significant progress has been made since his previous inspection in June. Several major components have now been installed, and critical infrastructure is advancing in different areas of the facility.

Once operational, the first turbine is expected to deliver approximately 57 megawatts of electricity to Guyana's national grid. The remaining units are to be brought online afterwards, in keeping with the project's implementation schedule.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by the Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation and by Winston Brassington, head of the gas to energy task force and project lead. Also on the tour were the senior petroleum coordinator at the Ministry of Natural Resources and the head of the GPL Executive Management Committee.

The inspection forms part of the government's periodic assessment of the project. Officials maintain that the works are being monitored to ensure they remain aligned with the established schedule.

The gas to energy project is expected to play a major role in expanding Guyana's electricity generation capacity as the country continues to experience growing demand for power.
