NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — September 9, 2026
Minister of Human Services and Social Security Dr. Vindhya Persaud visited Leopold Street on Monday, September 7, where she met residents and listened to their concerns first-hand.
The minister spent the afternoon moving through the community, stopping to speak with people and looking at ways to have their concerns addressed. Residents told her what they wanted for their community, and she discussed programmes aimed at creating more opportunities for them.
Dr. Persaud also checked in with seniors, families and children to ensure they are receiving the support they need.
During the visit, many residents signed up for free courses offered through the Women's Innovation and Investment Network. Others used the opportunity to check on the status of their old age pension and public assistance applications.
The visit allowed residents to raise issues directly with the minister rather than travelling to an office, and to get answers on pending applications on the spot.
The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security says Dr. Persaud will return to Leopold Street as plans move ahead to bring programmes directly into the community. These include training sessions and youth initiatives.
The ministry has not yet given dates for the return visit or for the start of the planned programmes.
