NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — September 21, 2026
Students from several Guyanese secondary schools showcased garments made from discarded materials at the TVET Expo and Fair 2026, held at the Arthur Chong Convention Centre.
The event featured the Trash to Fashion Show, part of the Recycle Reinvent Runway segment, which challenged students to transform recyclable and reused materials into original fashion pieces.
The competition was judged across four categories: casual wear, professional and career wear, creative and avant garde, and cultural and themed wear.
In the casual or recycled chic category, a student identified as Molina of Friendship Secondary School took first place with a design called Rise of the Golden Arrowhead.
The professional and career wear category was won by a student identified as Saudia of North Georgetown Secondary School, with a piece called Clocket.
In the creative and avant garde category, a student identified as Destiny of Christ Church Secondary School placed first with a design titled Reclaim Royalty.
Norwich Georgetown Secondary School dominated the cultural and themed wear category, securing both first and second place. A student identified as Taifa won first place for a piece called Offishka, while a student identified as Atara placed second with a design called Luku Nu Beauty.
Individual recognitions were also given out. Molina received awards for best overall design, most wearable design, and best stage presence, while Destiny was recognised for most creative outfit, best use of recycled material, and best transformation.
Organisers said the showcase demonstrates how technical and vocational education can extend beyond the classroom, giving students the chance to build creativity, problem-solving ability, entrepreneurship, and practical skills. They added that initiatives like the Trash to Fashion Show encourage students to rethink what is considered waste and turn it into something innovative and ready for the world of work.
