NEW AMSTERDAM — Residents of Islington Village, Greater New Amsterdam, are calling on the authorities to speed up rehabilitation of their sea wall and to address sand that has accumulated along the area.
Residents say the sand has become a major inconvenience affecting their daily activities and, in some cases, their ability to carry out their work. They want it either removed or the rehabilitation completed as quickly as possible.
They also say the condition of the sea wall is contributing to flooding in the community, creating additional difficulties.
For fishermen the situation is particularly hard. One fisherman said the accumulated sand has made it more difficult to access the area and carry out his work, especially at night.
“They come and they load sand in front of my gap, a whole heap of sand,” one resident said. “They say they’re building up the sea wall because of flood.”
Residents also raised safety concerns, saying the condition of the sea wall could lead to flooding and accidents, particularly involving elderly residents and children who could lose their balance and fall.
